The supernatural always existed in the world of Deadlock, but only when an eclipse triggered an event known as the Maelstrom near the end of the 19th century, which opened Astral Gates across the Earth, did the world at large accept it wasn't just myth.
Now, 50 years later, two Patrons, the Hidden King and the Archmother, are trying to enter this plane, promising to fulfill the wish of anyone that helps them by completing the ritual. The ritual includes two teams battling each other in the streets of New York, trying to prevent the other team from summoning their patron.
Rem is a sleepy child from the world of dreams. He and his little helpers found themselves stranded in New York by accident, searching the five boroughs for a way home. Rem seeks to summon the Patrons so that he can finally return to his family and take a big nap!
Nobody knows what Rem is, his species thus yet unknown. He has familiar traits though, such as black fur, a bird beak mouth, large cat-like ears, and a lion tail. His height is due to the fact that he is a child, and as such he understands the world as one.
He doesn't understand big words like 'nuanced' or 'sarcastic'. He mentiones in a voice line that he doesn't know how to read, and his voice in general is that of a child. More often than not, he's squeaking and squaking regardless of the emotion—joy, fear, yawning... Especially yawning! His communication style is very blunt and short, in contrast to his want to be friends with everyone. Though in general, allies find him adorable and often strive to protect him at all costs!
Given the name—and Rem's outfit—it's obvious that he's related to sleep in some way. Lost from the dream world, he's primarily focused on sleeping, having naps, and pillow fights. All of his abilities relate to sleep in one way or another!
"The best part of being asleep, is being asleep."
Rem's name references Rapid Eye Movement, an active phase of sleep in which most dreaming occurs.
Despite being friendly with most other characters in the game, the only defined relationship he has is with Haze, who is nicknamed "Dreamwalker" and "Dreamstalker". The exact reason as to how, why, or when the two met and became frieds is not yet known, but given the consistent themes of sleep it makes sense! She's pretty protective over Rem and dislikes the fact that he's fighting, wanting to help him find his way home.
Rem's curiosity appeals to me most of all. The dichotomy between a small mystical child versus extreme power is exciting, and he's just so, so cute! He wasn't my first main in the game, but after trying him once, I immediately fell in love. Not only is his gameplay fun, but his personality is something I find relatable—direct, honest, and always friendly, even when commenting on enemy deaths and such.
Of course, I also thoroughly enjoy his themes of sleep. As a resident sleeper myself, I understand the want to get back home to take the best nap of his life... I really hope he can find his dreams again!
I think he's the closest thing to a true healer in the game. Other characters do heal, but Rem feels like a main support, which is my preferred play style!
"Pillow fights are fun."
"I'll feel better after a nap."
"They're good at doing things I'm too lazy to do, heh."
"Naps are good for you."
"Ima throw my pillow at 'em cause I'm carryin' a pillow and that's really all I can throw!"
"Friends help each other out."
"I want candy. Or a gun. Probably candy, but maybe a gun, I dunno!"
"I don't know guys, you really shouldn't give me responsibilities."
"I'mma summon a god, I'mma get home, then I'mma take a nap."
"Part of me hopes that after today, we'll be friends for life, but if everything goes well, Ima go home and never see you guys again. So we can be friends and never talk to each other!"
